Snow

Here are a few photos from the nursery after the ice storm last year. I guess we have been lucky we haven't had any of this yet, but some real snow would be really nice. I know a lot of companies rely on snow removal in the winter and we are just not getting it.

Earth Kind Perennials

At the Western Trade Show last weekend I got the chance to sit in on a talk about a fairly new program called Earth Kind. They have done a lot of research on Roses and are preparing to start trials on perennials and shrubs. It is basically a university study that is running trials on specific plants in distinct categories (height, sun tolerance, etc) by growing the plants according to an established protocol. They will record data on survival and ability to thrive of each species tested.

They are doing the research regionally and will end up with a list specific to each area of the country. I was very impressed with the way they are setting up the project and their goals. It is research based and not a marketing tool to make money.

I don't have all of the specifics so checkout their website: http://earthkind.tamu.edu/

This is from their website:

Earth Kind Goals Include:
Landscape water conservation

Safe use and handling of fertilizers & pesticides in the landscape

Reduction of yard wastes entering landfills

Landscaping for Energy Conservation

Spring Teaser

Nothing much to write about at this time of year, just getting set up. Maybe some spring perennial photos will be a good start.
